TRUE ADULTHOOD

The following is a (lightly edited) transcript from my recent conversation with Jen Ciszewski on her podcast, Inspire Health by Jen. A comprehensive index + direct links can be accessed here. Enjoy!

THE TRANSCRIPT

We’ve got these authorities in our lives that say, “I understand you’re built to be this way, but we need you to be this way instead.” And you’re like, “Well… but how?”

It seems a great part of the Journey (we could call it the Hero’s Journey or the Heroine’s Journey) involves this act of deconstruction: wading through + deconstructing layers of prior expectation, personal assumption, unconscious agreement - compromises that we’ve made along the way. We must do this in order to come into full adulthood.

Full adulthood is full ownership of our personal experience - recognizing that each one of us is entirely responsible for how we have encountered our own life - acknowledging that there is no one in the world who can remove that power from us unless we have given it to them.

Becoming an Adult (a true Adult: capital ‘A’ Adult) is about saying, “I’ll take that back now, thank you. I reclaim complete responsibility for who I am + what I choose to do.

When we do this, we can look quite different from what we have come to know: different from the shape those expectations forced us into, that’s for sure.

Gradually, we reclaim the true ‘shape’ of ourselves, what is most natural - the truth.
