ILLUMINATING THE ORDINARY
CONTEXT
This short excerpt emerged in conversation with Bella Krystal + Simone Gers during our recent series hosted by Unlock Your Design. It describes a practice that remains at the very heart of everything that I do, both personally + professionally. It underpins all of my work, and informs my everyday way of being in life.
I hope that the idea can connect for you in some significant way as well. Enjoy!
TRANSCRIPT
This is a phenomenon that I refer to as Illuminating the Ordinary. All of a sudden, something seemingly lifeless + mundane takes on a whole new meaning; it does this because you have chosen to allow it to. Everyday activities can be illuminated in this way; commonplace items can be illuminated in this way.
The beautiful surprise is that this ‘new meaning’ has always been inherent in the item or the act itself. Life itself is flushed with meaning in every possible direction. Every breath is a gift. We’re the ones who have become desensitized to this with all of our goals + ambitions + disembodied concepts.
As we come down into our own feet, down into the every-moment contact with life that is, in fact, the very most fundamental fact of human living, our hearts open up + we remember how to feel - how to feel what’s happening inside of us, around us, for us, through us.
It’s about becoming human again. It’s about coming into total contact with life: not as an idea, but as a meaningful event, an every-moment miracle, a gift.
