A WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE WHISKEY RIVER: AND WHO CARES ABOUT FIFTY-CENT DRINKS?

MARCH 16, 2013

there were people
and boots and beer bottles
everywhere
everywhere

everywhere
you turned something
dancing, something

a little too high &
a little too tight &

those eyes and those
coy smiles daring
men

to come-and-get-it
and music

so loud it raised
walls between you &
anyone else so that

you couldn’t speak
only watch
and nod and sway and

smile at how out-of-place
you were there until

she grabbed you by
the arm & begged you to
two-step

to which you said, no way!
to which she said, you’re doing it!
and then you did it

feeling stupid and good
at the same
time when, ready to leave

she stood on
her tippy-toes and gave you

a kiss goodbye.
