DRIVING WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS

even with
my eyes closed
the winter-grey Ohio sky
is still bright enough
to outline
the back of my eyelids
burnt-orange
as i lay
here on my side
thinking
about
how

the
first time
i left home
i was running

away from something.
(the second time, too.) but
this time
this time

this time
i’ll be moving
toward something.

not running
not angry
not reacting,
just moving

because i can.

and i’ll bet i still cry
just like those other times,
only the tears will be
a different kind:
less desperate
less lonely
more grateful.

& maybe
(this time) i’ll
even want to remember
the trip.
